Experiment § Injection Molding

Many things that appear to be plastic at first glance are actually plastic covered in other materials, such as glass, metal, or CFRP plate. Using the injection molding process to coat the outside of these materials with plastic protects the inner layer from oxidation, corrosion, or abrasion. Not only can a variety of colors, patterns, or textures be introduced to enhance the aesthetic appearance, but functional coatings can also be added, including waterproofing, anti-slip, and insulation. The material to be covered has to be coated with GS553 thermoplastic elastomer first, and then put into the mold for injection, in order to make a good adhesion between the two. Frequently used injection molding materials are PP, PE, PS, PC, ABS, PA, PMMA, etc. (Figure. 1). We don't have an injection molding machine in our factory, so how can we evaluate the strength between the plastic and the covered material? We use PC and CFRP plates for our experiments. First of all, we use a lighter to locally heat the PC to melt, and then we use the molten PC to adhere CFRP plates. If the PC blisters, it may be because there is water inside the plastic, using 120 ℃ / 4 hours baking to remove water, will not cause this phenomenon (Fig. 2). Heating the plastic with a high-temperature heat gun eliminates the risk of flame-induced black smoke contamination and results in an appearance closer to molten PC during the injection process (Fig. 3,4). With this method, we can effectively assess the strength of the covering adhesive. For further testing, we plan to collaborate with an injection molding factory for practical application, welcome to contact us if you are interested. ——Author: Mr. Wen-Hao, Cai

Activity § Training and promotion of KMS

"The Knowledge Management System (KMS), which stores, organizes, and retrieves knowledge to help employees quickly find the information they need, is a key initiative promoted by the company this year. We held 17 educational training sessions for colleagues to learn how to use it (Fig. 1,2). A staggering amount of data over the years, such as teaching materials for newcomer training, methods for using tools, and research and development content, can now be found quickly. Colleagues who have taken the class have highly praised the system and believe that it can make our learning more efficient (Fig. 3~5).

Knowledge § Effect of using antioxidants for silicone gel

Silicone has good heat resistance, the main reason is that the bond energy of the silicon-oxygen bond on the main chain is about 100 kJ/mol higher than that of the general carbon-carbon bond, and the decomposition temperature under air is about 300℃. The addition of antioxidants enables the decomposition temperature to be increased to about 400°C. In the heat aging test, after heating at 250°C for 7 days, the Shore D hardness of silica gel with antioxidants increased by only 35 %, but without antioxidants it increased by 190 %. The elongation at break of the silica gel with the antioxidant decreased from 380% to 270%, while without the antioxidant, it dropped to less than 10% in 2 days.

Living § Training for land-based observation of the Sousa chinensis

The white dolphins on the west coast of Taiwan have been impacted by human activities and sea development, and it is estimated that there are only about 50 of them left in the population, which has been classified as a critically endangered species. The white dolphin has obvious limitations in survival and can only inhabit shallow waters within 30 meters and 5 kilometers from the coast, gradually evolving into a species endemic to Taiwan. Wouldn't it be an endemic species if it was poorly adapted to its environment, had its own unique ideas in the group, and behaved differently from the rest of the population? I thought about these questions while I was blowing off steam on the beach in Changbin. The founder of the Matsu Dolphin Ecology Centre, Mr. Chen Bingheng, put forward an interesting idea: "If eco-environmental protection can also be formed into some kind of belief, environmental protection groups may no longer need to worry about funding, just like the temples." Breakthrough thinking may be the effect of the combination of different industries, as unique as the white dolphin. At the Matsu Dolphin Ecology Centre, I felt the efforts of this group of partners to continuously protect dolphins. They conducted activities such as white dolphin observation training, walking through Lukang, Taiwanese language lectures, white dolphin DIY crafts, ecological lectures, and beach cleaning, in an effort to foster environmental awareness. After all, environmental protection is not a matter of passion, it requires long-term persistence and sustainable development. ——Author: Mrs. Qing-Mei, Lu
