The structural acrylic adhesive is one kind of adhesive that is flexible, fast curing at room temperature, and able to form very strong bonds to a variety of inert plastic materials (IPM), including low surface energy (LSE) plastics, thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyamide (PA), and so on. The structural adhesive can be achieved an excellent bond on the IPM without the need for the surface pre-treatment. However, most of the common acrylic adhesives on the market are flammable and have a strong odor. Hence, we recently developed the new non-flammable acrylic adhesive (brand name: KA005-5 AB) that can be cured at room temperature after mixing the two parts together. KA005-5 AB can exhibit a good adhesion to most inert plastics, glass, metal, and composite materials without the need for special surface treatment. The adhesive can pass the flame resistance UL94V-0 standard.
Fig.1 shows the flame-resistant test model of the adhesive. The specimen was vertically burned two times with 10 seconds each time on the burner. The flamed specimen w immediately and no flame drips after moving away from the burner, impling that the adhesive could be complied with UL94V-0 standard. The specimen before and after burning was in Fig. 2. The adhesive exhibited a good adhesion to most of IPM and hetero-plastic substrates at room temperature without “Primer” coating or special surface pre-treatment. Fig. 3 shows the shear strength of KA005-5 applied to various substrates PE (40 Kgf/cm2), PA (40 Kgf/cm2), PP (45 Kgf/cm2), PS (46 Kgf/cm2), ABS (59 Kgf/cm2), PET (65 Kgf/cm2), PMMA (65 Kgf/cm2), PC (72 Kgf/cm2), PVC (72 Kgf/cm2), PP/GF (86 Kgf/cm2), PA/GF (86 Kgf/cm2). KA005-5 is pack in 10:1 double cartridge 50 ml or 490ml (Fig. 4).
