Experiment § DTMA function

The thermomechanical analyzer TMA Q400 owned by Everwide Chemical is similar to general TMA to measure the coefficient of thermal expansion and Tg and has a dynamic (dynamic change) function as the mechanism for applying force to the test piece, which can use three points. The curved pattern draws a map similar to DMA.

First, use a diamond cutter to cut the test piece 9 × 2 × 2 mm. Place the test piece on the stage of the TMA three-point bending test. The front view and side view are shown in Figures 1 and 2, respectively.

For example, take this experimental condition: starting from -30°C, scanning at 3°C per minute to 50°C. During the heating scan process, the probe moves with a frequency of 1 Hz, and the force changes between 0.03N and 0.53N. Using periodic force to measure the viscoelastic changes of substances, you can draw the same graph as DMA and obtain storage modulus, loss modulus, loss tangent (tanδ), etc., viscoelasticity data. (Figure 3) This TMA can start experiments at -90°C, and it is also quite suitable for low Tg materials.

Knowledge § How to distinguish the types of fillers?

The most formal way to distinguish fillers is to analyze the scattering spectrum of fillers with an X-ray. However, due to the high cost of X-ray equipment, it is a simple method to replace infrared spectroscopy: mix various fillers with a specific ratio of resin to create an infrared spectrum profile and use the characteristic absorption of the filler in the infrared spectrum to determine the filling material. This method can determine the type of filler, but it is not easy to analyze the relative proportions of two or more filters simultaneously.

 

Living § Spontaneous Mr. OK

If someone asks: "What can I learn in the laboratory of Teacher Feng-zhi, Zhang of the Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chiao Tung University?" We think: "Freestyle of study" might be a good answer. When enrolling in graduate school, the teacher always said to our freshmen very seriously: He hopes that the students entering the laboratory will spontaneously. The teacher also set an example. He arrived at the research room around 7 in the morning and did not leave until after 11 in the evening. It is a complete example of "academic as a career." Our students naturally see the talents together and cultivate a strong sense of ambition. As the years grow, spontaneity is a crucial indicator. Not only will it affect the final achievement level, but it will also shape the atmosphere of the entire process.

There are no bureaucracies in the laboratory, and no system management is discussed. Everyone works in a self-disciplined spirit. This way of life is not well-known, so it's called "freestyle of study." When we are engaged in thesis research, we often report progress and ask questions to the teacher. Once, the teacher said to us: disciples do not have to be as good as teachers because each student only writes one essay, but the teacher has to instruct many students, so a student must specialize in certain materials surpass the teacher. We were greatly encouraged by this.

The teacher's attitude towards us is exciting, including choosing the thesis topic and experimentation bottleneck attempts. We proposed to the teacher, "I want to try this way." The teacher always said "Okay," so we always felt that he was "Okay." gentlemen." Looking at these things as a whole, Mr. OK says: Let's be creative and give it a go. How can you know if you don't try it? I will support you from behind. This teacher's attitude is another element of creating a "freestyle of study."

Whether it is experience titles, various awards, research quality, number of papers, etc., it can prove that the teacher is an outstanding scholar. But what the teacher admires most is not the indicators mentioned above revealed, but the miracle of "the rise of the second army." Many laboratory members did not have the educational background of a prestigious national school during the university period. There is no shortage of people who graduated with four skills and two specialists. In terms of research potential, it is not the best combination. It is strange to say that under the teacher's guidance, many students finally performed beyond the first army.

What is more surprising than this kind of change? This structural change is the fruit of the warmth of the "freestyle of study." Our mentor, Professor Feng-zhi, Zhang recently celebrated his 70th birthday. He only gave this document to this good gentleman who asked us to commemorate that period bathed in free learning spontaneously.
